Great poem Susan, thanks for posting.   I'll be thinking of this quote next time in the midst of chaparral:

one eye is weeping     From a twig's having lashed across it open.

Might even save me from getting an eye poked out.

There's more to that poem but this part seemed the more applicable. Yeah, the eyes open or closed can be kind of vulnerable when thrashing. Oye.
