Dinkey Dome

I was just out at the neglected gem of Dinkey Dome today - I love this Dome.  The Dome is getting a bit more difficult to approach now due to road closures, but with a higher clearance vehicle, you can still get to the junction of the small sub-road (9S405) and 9S10 road where you can park to hike in.  9S10 road formally could be approached from Rock Creek Road, but now Rock Creek Road is washed out between Dinkey Creek Road and the junction of 9S10.  Also, 9S10 road has been closed at Rock Creek Road since the bridge over Cow Creek was damaged by a tree that fell onto the bridge several years ago.

However, today I found that you can get to the junction of 9S10 road and the sub-road 9S405, which is not drivable except by a offroad Quad vehicle, from the roads that go out to the Dinkey Lakes Willow Meadow Trailhead.  If you go to the Forest Service office in Prather, they will provide you with a map of the roads to take to the Dinkey Lakes trailhead.  When on 9S10 road, turn right onto the 9S10 road instead of proceeding on 9S62 to the Dinkey Lakes trailhead.  The 9S10 road between the 9S62 road and where I park to hike out to Dinkey Dome has many rocks in the road.  You do not need 4WD, but do need a higher clearance vehicle to avoid the under frame hitting the rocks.

Do not try driving more than several hundred feet down the sub-road 9S405 that goes out to near Dinkey Dome.  Due to trees growing over the road and the encroaching bushes on the sides, it is now only passible by the offroad narrow Quad vehicles and their trailers.  The hike from the junction of the sub-road and 9S10 road to Dinkey Dome is only about 45 minutes.

I will have to have a map in front of me to make sense of it. What have you been climbing up there? I love that place.
