Title: Fire!
Post by: DaveyTree on June 18, 2015, 03:51:18 pm
Evacuation taking place right now on Sky Ranch Road above Oakhurst for fire. Nothing really online yet but my son is up there working at Calvin Crest camp off that road and they are being evacuated.

From the pic he sent me it doesn't look huge and appears to be north of Sky Ranch road (6S70), East of Calvin Crest road and west of 6S47Y.

Webcam at Bass Lake (http://basslakeca.com/camera1.html) Air quality looks about on par with recent years of summer in the mountains of California.

One part of the report shows 15% contained, and the writeup in the same report shows zero.

Fire on Sky Ranch and North Fork. You might be able to take Beasore out of Bass Lake but may get trapped. Def not good for soyo.

The Corrine Fire is very similar in size to the Sky Fire. It sounds like it is near Redinger but I haven't seen it on a map to be sure.

Sigh.  Still so early in the season too :(.       We camped near Granite Creek and The Balls last few days.    We were fortunate to avoid smoke for the most part.     On the drive out on Beasore this morning the road leading west from Cold Springs Junction was closed, and then on the drive back to the valley along 222 and 41 there were many fire vehicles coming up.

Here's a shot of BD in the haze that crept in on Thursday night.  10 minutes prior to this shot being taken, it was nearly perfectly clear.

Sky fire is contained but road still closed because the fire is burning under ground and popping up in spots due to doubt conditions.

Northfork fire still going and now a 3rd fire on 222 which I believe is in the oneils area.

Thanks for the updates. It sounds like they are pouncing on these fires with manpower and machines the best they can. All we can do is hope for the best and hope no one gets hurt.

So the severity of the smoke - not too bad if the wind was in your favor I guess? How long was it that smoky where you were as shown in your photo, DJ?

So relieved the firefighting efforts have been huge and successful.

Hi Susan,  just smoky for a few hours in the evenings then cleared nicely by morning, and never that intense.  We were fortunate.   I'm guessing this smoke was from one of the North Fork fires.     The Balls/Jackass Lakes area  was quite clear as well, w/ maybe a little hint of smoke.

The real problems seemed to be along Sky Ranch Rd as DaveyTree mentions.  From reading SNO, I can only imagine the stress the parents were going through as they were trying to sort out evacuating their kids from camp.   I met a group of climbers headed to Fresno Dome who changed plans and climbed at The Balls, and there was an outdoor youth group  that came up Friday to climb in The Balls area too.   I have no idea about Shuteye.  Smoke coming from two different fires kind of hard to sort out!

Seems we should have seen smoke as we drove away at the end of the day Sudnay, but what consumed our views was the advancing storm. Noted a lot of fire trucks on the roads though which was concerning.

We got showered with ash today on Shuteye Ridge and were kinda freaked out not knowing how close it was. Smells really strong and close. Thanks for the link, donutnational. We made a special trip to our favorite reception point to see what's up.

Thanks for posting! We were in the grayhood today and feels like Shuteye is on fire. Ash has been  falling like spindrift the better part
of the afternoon. Drove away to find reception to see what's up just now.  Gonna stay the night still. Hope this gets under control quickly. Gonna be uber depressing if not.

Man that grew fast! Saw dozens of trucks coming into the area when we were leaving. We were surprised to see how close it is to Bass Lake and North Fork, right above town.

Saw a few pics posted on FB that appeared to be from on the water. It looked pretty close to the lake. Friend who lives at YLP said mornings are smokey at her place until the wind pushes it up and out.

So stressful how out of control the fire still must be. Our thoughts are with the fire fight and fighters and all those who have had to evacuate. Sounds like very rough conditions.

We were so down on Saturday as we went from commenting how much we love the forest and views which always seem so pristine there in the grayhood, to wondering what all the helicopter activity was about this time, only to suddenly know because we could smell the smoke before seeing it. Soon smoke filled the surroundings, and it was hard to tell where it originated... We must have guessed first from the east, then south and north before seeing the plume due west turning the sun and everything red.

I worried it must be close because of all the ash falling, but John encouraged that ash fallout could come from very far away. Well, it didn't seem far though. And as the crow flies, what is only 10 miles or so? There's a half an hour drive along Minarets of burned watershed from the French fire. Anyway, I know there are heroic efforts going on right now... and all I am doing is sitting here again helplessly hoping for the best.

Inciweb states, "the Willow Fire is located on the northern edge of the  2001 footprint of the North Fork Fire. As the fire moves into this previously burned area, resistance to control increases due to heavy brush and dead woody materials."

Shouldn't there be a plan to reduce this sort of flammable debris? Has not been one there in 14 years.

The 20 or so miles on Minarets Road of waste left from the French Fire and on-going timber harvest is 13,837 acres of burn.

A spot fire has started from this Willow Fire just a few hours ago, further north closer to Central Camp. We can see it clearly from my inlaws place across Bass Lake, where I've been visiting for the past 4 days. I think they are just now getting planes on it, but it looks very strong and formidable. Don't know if they will name this fire something else or just an extension of the Willow Fire. It is so incredibly hot, and breezy today, so conditions are terrible.  :(

Thinking of you all out there Nate. Hoping to hear better news of containment imminently.

All this by another child arsonist. Wonder what the real story is with this, and all the other recent years' rash of area fires. We heard one teen was already paroled after serving only a year. Ought to be way more severe consequences widely known.

Thanks Susu. Looks like the Willow Fire has been mostly contained and under control, without any bldgs/neighborhoods affected, despite the evacuations. Good work firefighters!

Here is a pic just 5 hours or so after it started, from across Bass Lake. Lucas said, "Dad, it looks like a volcano!"

I did my climbing in Mammoth, on a bicycle today. Ugh, i need to train if I'm going to do this stuff. I used to do the Deathride, 129 miles + 16,000' of climbing. Today was a measly 72 miles and 3600' of climbing and it hurt. I guess a couple 15 mile bike rides isn't enough training at my age. Talk about butt hurt.

Good climbing Dan, sounds like quite a day and a death ride in its own right given the smokey air. ! Hope it wasn't as smokey around Mammoth during your ride yesterday as I heard it was today.

Fresno Dome wasn't too bad for smoke Saturday but was surrounded in a thick fog-like smoke last night and most the day. Wonder how much of the smoke was from the Rough Fire and how much Tenaya. As we headed home, we saw a new fire in Oakhurst also.

Mike, that sounds like a great way to spend the last days of summer!

Munge, you are wise.
