Title: Patricia Bowl - East Side Crag High Sierra

Anyone been to Patricia Bowl? I've read something alluring about it, something like it is the Indian Creek of the Sierras? Then I spoke with a friend about going who said the pitches are pretty short. As in, not worth a long drive, but if you happen to be out there anyway, then go for sure. Not much information on internet searches, but enough that I want to get there some day.

Never heard of it but then, what do I know?

As far as exotic places go, I have been to Athol Idaho. No climbing there as far as I know.

Patricia Bowl is nice but no Indian Creek.  There is a nice 4 star 11b crack that stands out as the highlight of the area and a bunch of other good cracks.  The best part is the high elevation, shade, and cool temps. If it's not a hot day it can be very cold.

Thanks Jeff. I saw some multi-pitch routes there and lots of multi-starred 10s which made me surprised to hear the area seemed to have short climbs? Sounds good to me even so.

Munge, that new crag must really be something. Go on if you can...

             Description P1 (5.10a):  Climbs up the right side of a giant wedged block about 25 feet off the ground.  Continue up double cracks to the highest ledge before the upper headwall.  Bolted anchor at 85 feet.
 
P2 (5.10a):  Start out slightly up and left of the anchor and get ready for 165 feet of hand jamming!  Generally there are two or three cracks to choose from.  When in doubt, stay to the left.  Bolted anchor.
 
P3 (5.9):  Not recommended due to loose rock and friable holds.  If you do climb this, we left some fixed junk to rap from, beware.

Looked at Patricia Bowl photos on the web it certainly looks good.

1987 AAJ:

Consummate Corner, Patricia Bowl. While ski touring in Patricia Bowl, above the 10,000-foot road in Rock Creek Canyon, I spotted a wall of granite crags that were hidden from the road. In July, David Wilson and I hiked into the cirque in just half an hour and found one dihedral that was by far the most appealing line. It lies in a cleft about midway along the southern wall of the cirque, and begins out of a snow couloir. After negotiating the snow, two continuous 5.10 pitches led to easier climbing and the summit plateau of a minor unnamed peak. (III, 5.10+ .) (Editor’s note—At least two other routes have been done here, both 5.10.)

1990 AAJ:

Patricia Bowl, Rock Creek Area. Paticia Bowl is a high bowl directly above (northwest) of Rock Creek Lodge. Access is via the trail from just above Rock Creek Lake. On the right (north) side of the bowl is a series of towers on the ridge. E-Ticket (5.10b) climbs the obvious crack system on the large, clean, rectangular tower on the left for two pitches. Diamond Star Tower (5.10, two pitches) ascends the south side of the beautiful tower on the far right. The tower is visible from Rock Creek Lodge. Templo del Sol (5.11/12, four pitches) is on the longest continuous section of good-quality rock near the head of the bowl on its left side. The formation looks like a temple halfway up with vertical pillars on each side. The route ascends an obvious crack/corner system to the left side of the ledge, then up a very thin finger crack on the wall above. Two rappels got us down. Take a double set of protection from tiny to 3½". All routes were done by Todd Vogel, Pat Kent and me.

Actually there is some climbing around Athol. That's my home turf me being a 4th generation northern Idahoan. I was born up in Bonners Ferry (only because there was no doctor in Moyie Springs). My family still has a cabin on Coeur d'Alene Lake but I haven't been there in 5 or 6 years. It's for sale if you are in the market.

I've been there a few times and still have a few things there I would like to do.  Haven't been yet this year,  been waiting for it to get hot and without chance of thunderstorms. Sunday looks good, who's in?

Would love to live up that way. The only problem was the very outward signs of neo-Nazi insignias on street lamps that would stay up for days at a time (read, too close to Hayden Lake for my taste to have a house in the woods), and the naturally beautifully tanned skin of my spousal-like significant other.

Pardon LOL about Athol! :) Appreciate the background on PB!

I used to visit Coeur d'Alene Lake too. Beautiful there for sure.

Jeff, wish I could. My partner for the weekend has been there before and feels it's too far to drive. Thought you would be heading down to Soyo but then not if your day off begins Sunday.
