Someone should establish a line going up the black streak. Pretty decent friction.
and by decent, I mean of course, desperately awesome.

Anyone ever done the white streak to the right of this one?
I think it would go stance.

Damn I miss Gray and climbing out there with a bunch of you.
-
Yeah, for sure. Had some of the best times ever out there with the bunches of us. Not to mention the sometimes long days turning into nights and straggling back to camp after dark to a bunch of y'all hanging around the campfire.

Great shots, Dan. Really glad we bumped into you guys and got to hang out. We were wondering if the smoke would be much worse for you guys at Squaw but it doesn't look that bad and you appear to be having a great time.
-
Nice Dan. What is the dome in the bottom rt of the last pic?
-
The road was barricaded where Beasore hits the Minarets pavement. Not wanting to upset the man, we drove down past the pack station and didn't encounter any barricades. The smoke was fairly bad in the morning but a NW breeze came up and the afternoon was nice.
What is the dome in the bottom rt of the last pic?
That would be the massive Balloon Dome.
Same day:

-
Great pictures! What a fun crew!
-
Looks like a fun time, Dan. Did you climb Snake Crack?
-
Yep, Snake Crack on the main dome. The traverse to the bolt is the spiciest move but not that hard. It's a fine climb.
I climbed something between the two lines you showed me on the little dome. There were some bolts but gear belay on the first pitch and tree belay on the second. Nice warmup.

Jerry
EDIT: Ah, shucks. Wanted to share a photo, but stupid Google has altered Picasa and made it nigh impossible for me to figure out how to find the image url to paste here like I used to. Why oh why do they have to try and force me into a lame social network to compete with Facebook and disrupt all that was familiar and useful.
-
Nate-
Picasa is way too overwhelming and invasive for my comfort but has some cool features. I hope you figure out how to post the photo. I still agree with what your post says, even without the photo, "Always a great partner and a great guy...Jerry"
-
Yes, Nate is a great person, and I imagine great climbing partner! And I would like to see that photo. If you need help posting it, I'm happy to too... Jerry, you could email the photo for posting.

Retry here (from dropbox).
Behold, Jerry, an all around great guy and climbing partner:

ok. funny they showed up for me. Won't have time for awhile to deal with this.
-
You guys are embarassing me! I will say I have a certain satisfaction that Nate, the computer guy, can't post a picture. I have some nice FA pictures of Sigrid and I but have given up!
-
If the problem is photo storage, I have lots of storage available on my website. I could set up a password protected folder where photos can be uploaded. Certainly not unlimited but I think I have 100's of gigs of unused storage. Let me know.
-
That is very generous of you to offer that Dan.
-
You guys are embarassing me! I will say I have a certain satisfaction that Nate, the computer guy, can't post a picture.
:) I actually CAN post a picture, but am currently being stubborn about starting an account with just one more photo hosting service. It's really aggravating (and mostly time consuming) to have to keep jumping from one service to another to perform what should be a simple task. Not so enthused about starting a photobucket account now. Maybe I'll go back to flickr. Stupid google had to change Picassa on everyone and I don't believe it's possible to post up a pic from there on other sites anymore, and I'm tired of digging to figure out if it's possible. Used to be sorta easy.
-
I will load up a similar feature for Picasa just for you Nate. Tell me if it is worth the space on the screen. This could get crowded.
I can do Flickr and others too, so let me know peoples.
-
worth a shot I suppose, as I'm curious how and if it'll work.
The multiple large windows IS kinda annoying, but may help folks.
-
I loaded the Picasa feature up and it seems to be for a shared account that we all have access to. Does that seem to be worth it? I imagine it would fill up like any other photo sharing account but quicker.
The big window is annoying. I am pretty sure it wouldn't be useable for smartphones either.
If there are any further comments on this subject, please post to the "Posting Photos and Video" thread. Thanks.

Jerry appears at last!
Thru flickr, but man it sure wasn't straightforward like before. And it's smaller than I prefer. Hmmm. Seems everyone, except maybe photobucket is trying to make it hard or to discourage hosting photos to share elsewhere, other than email, twitter, facebook, blogs, and the like. A real pain to find the proper url link with .jpg at the end.
Edited, as I found out how to post larger. Please tell me the image shows up, John or anyone.
-
I was blind, but now can see.
-
Prescribed burn or Hawaiian volcano?
-
I can't believe they don't watch those prescribed burns closer. That was really crazy driving through at night.
-
We were amazed and lucky to see two mountain lions on Minarets close to Chiquito one of the nights of the prescribed burn. Unfortunately, they were too swift for photos.
-
That is awesome Susan. Years ago, up and behind Jackass Rock, Leo had a long staredown with a mountain lion who strolled into his camp.
-
Yes, it was exciting! I couldn't believe how close to a more traveled area they were - in the middle of Minarets Road near the parking for Chiquito Dome. We think we surprised them when they were about to make more lions. The duo split with one cat jumping into the nearest woods and the other running across the road only to double back and cross the road again right before our eyes to get back to its mate.
I would like to hear more about that stare down Leo had, though Tiki-Ger just told me what must be the same story last weekend. I had heard that if a cat let you see them, they were ready for you to be their next meal. Have by now heard of a few hair-raising stories of people feeling tracked by a cat when alone out there.
By the way, we've seen so many bears, foxes, owls, ring tails... on the roads at night in recent weeks. Easy thoroughfare for them too.
-
Seeing those cats was the coolest thing ever. I want one. What could possibly go wrong with having your own mountain lion?
Seen so many foxes lately too. They are everywhere, like mice.
-
I would like to hear more about that stare down you had.
As mentioned, it was Leo, not I. Ger recounted the same story, sounds like. Didn't sound like the cat was threatening in any way, just curious and/or nonchalant.
I like hearing about the wildlife encounters. As much as you guys live out there, you're bound to see it all. Let us know when you see bigfoot, or the elusive SoYo unicorns.
-
Saw two albino Jackalopes in one day. What are the chances? Saw a Keebler Elf too.
-
my two small bears sound so anticlimactic after the possibility of soyo unicorns! Then again myths abound. Long multi pitch First Ascents, quality granite, and good people are supposed to be in the Soyo too. ;)
-
A solar powered tent that will run 110 or 220, perfect for this time of year!

8) :) :D ;D
OK,
a bit too many smileys, but that's some funny stuff guys.
Jerry and Sigrid have become friends with a hawk (or was it a peregrin?) out at Wamello Dome, I hear.
-
You just need to spend some time at our house for some wildlife encounters. We see deer, bear, bobcats, foxes and coyotes all the time and occasionally even a lion, all from the living room or while having a meal on the deck. 20 or so years ago a lion took a deer in the yard while the kids were playing outside, they were very content watch videos the rest of the day! We live in their territory not the opposite.
I am curious though about one sighting I mentioned to John and Susan a couple of years ago. It will be two years ago next month that I showed them the apptoach to Magic Wall. On the way back to the truck I saw a dark grey lion from about 50 feet away. It had absolutely no fear of me but I didn't feel threatened at all and enjoyed the leisurely encounter. Has anyone else ever seem or even heard of a lion this color?
-
I wonder what you saw that day Jerry. There are Jaguars in the American Southwest and there have been plenty of sightings of escaped exotic pets, legal and illegal, that have really confused people over the years, like monkeys and the like.
Those motion activated cameras that hunters use catch crazy stuff every once in a while.
We saw another huge cougar at Red Rocks, far to the right of the Brass Wall area, around the corner facing town. Sue was downhill from me and looks into some boulders and sees a dead sheep. As she is turning to tell me how stinky it was, I see a giant cougar come out from the other side of the same boulder she was looking under and bounds away up the hillside. Really close call.

Sweet shirt! Never heard of Winterhawk. Location or company?
-
A company from 30 or so years ago, long gone I imagine. If I remember correctly they were back east somewhere.
-
What a nice shot Jerry!

Is that Natty D?
-
Not Natty D. Huhuh. Sounds like a beer name. Must be getting to be that time.
-
The last photo was Jeff at Wawona.
-
Hey, I resemble that remark.
I am loving it over here in June Lake but Wo Dome is just one of the many things I am missing.
-
Glad to hear you are loving it out there, Jeff. Won't you have great climbing year-around now? So much rock out there you must have found some areas as serene?
-
Yep, climbed in the ORG yesterday. Funny how I am more scared climbing at Owens than most places I climb.
I am going ice climbing today, then back to the Gorge tomorrow. June Mtn opens on fri, although I am not sure how good that will be with the lack of snow.
As far as serene climbing areas, I am sure when I get off the beaten path I will find a ton. For now I am able to enjoy great climbing with the masses.
-
scared climbing at Owens than most places I climb.
why so?
the loose layer of choss on top that falls inward when the heavy winds kick in?
So want to get back to the Gorge. Miss that place.
Jeff, Hartley Springs (when dry again) is way fun casual bouldering right there. But probably under snow right now.
Take a look at Lower Rock Creek for some potential choss.
-
It is funny. I guess it's being used to one thing over another. And maybe you've got your guide hat on around crowds, seeing the many possibilities for things that could go haywire? Climbing where there's greater solitude, there's less distraction.
Plus does something happen with those who put up routes for so long that maybe you just prefer the way you would leave routes over the way others do?
Anyway, I like Owens but would take the Gray hood over it most any day of the week just to be able to hear wind in the trees and birds beep.
-
Well you know I love Gray. Haven't got enough in the past couple of years. But, at this time of year when it's sub zero temps in June Lake at night, I will be in a T-shirt at the China Wall the next day. And another cool thing there is I will probably see Peter Croft ginning ear to ear running up a dozen climbs loving it.
The reason the Gorge scares me is the ankle breaking, or worse, potential on so many climbs there. Sport climbing has a façade of safety but on so many climbs in the Gorge there are so many places you don't want to fall. There were 3 injuries at least since Nov, I am sure more. And you are right about the crowds, I've cringed multiple times watching people sketch clipping the 5th bolt on Hardly Wallbanger at the Pub. Was amazed that one guy that fell there before making the clip was able to push off the ledge below as he flew past it. A woman a few days before wasn't so lucky. And I wouldn't want 90% of the people I see belaying there belaying me. I feel the safest with Mony. I have seen several 30+ foot falls. This is sport climbing, why are people taking 30' falls. To many Sharma videos I guess, but when he falls he doesn't hit the wall it's all air. Another thing there is so many bolts are in very questionable rock that vibrates when you hit it with your hand let alone a hammer. But with all that said I am enjoying it a lot even when I am the dork carrying gear and sometimes placing it on sport routes when I can, why not.
-
Lol, awesome dorkery!
Yeah, a number of routes there were done ground up before it was widely understood to bolt the first bolts in such a way as to minimize groundfall if establishing for the masses.
Pics?
-
Well Jeff, you are looking at the ORG wrong, just pile up all the corpses to reach the first bolt easier.
-
I hear ya Jeff. What can you do? I don't mean that rhetorically. Witnessing accidents can be a day changer for sure.
Hardly Wallbanger - what a name for the route. I don't know the climb, but a quick web search shows that it was originally led on all gear? Is the rock friable, or what's the story there?
"Another thing there are so many bolts in very questionable rock that vibrate..." Ugh... that's messed up. ASCA time?
-
Or a good crash pad when I fall going for the second bolt.
I don't know the story but part of the ORG lore is a guy free falling all the way from the anchor on Hardley Wallbanger to the base and living. Check those knots!
Lots of bolted cracks in the Gorge.
-
Lots of bolted cracks in the Gorge.
I think that's a pretty recent phenomena too. Admittedly until some of those cracks are scrubbed to the bone, the surface rot is substantial. But I'm still not settled with it.
-
I totally remember a few bolted cracks there. More like "mixed" climbs that bolts won over the gear. I am also an oddball by bringing gear down there too, Jeff. I do remember doing a cool trad line or two there without bolts...no lines on those.
-
I keep scoping chossy cracks down there and wonder how much rock I need to remove to make it a worthy route that might get repeated. How much choss is acceptable to remove. There has got to be some solid rock at some point.
Oh and I placed a cam today on a face climb, no decking for me baby.
-
Californiaclimber magazine issue arrived today with an article on the Gorge. stoked
-
I imagine that you get to climb outside all the time these days Jeff. Much more than you could even in the Valley? Would love to see photos of the area. There's always the Beyond Section of the site. C'mon, make us envious. :D
-
I never bring a camera to the Gorge. Kinda funny how layz I get. Tired at the end of the day, the less you bring down the less you have to hump out of that ditch.
And yes, it is kinda ideal in the winter. Today I could go the Gorge and climb in the sun in shorts. I could drive 5 min and climb ice here in June or I could also turn right and drive 3 min and ski on June mtn.
-
Well that sounds awesome. So glad.
Here feeling like hibernating when the days are so short and it's already dark after work. And with the holiday rush, just gonna try and go with the downward spiral of holiday feasts, drinks, cookie baking, gift shopping... and enjoy even tho all this conspires to reek havoc on climbing. So good to get out there last weekend.
-
Glad you got out! Chiquto?
The holidays do have their drawbacks. Over here the crowds grow by 100%. Lee Vining and the Roadside ice here in June get very busy and the Gorge becomes a zoo. Over Turkey break it was hard to get parking in the Gorge, had to park on the road, not in the lot, if you didn't get an early start. The day after the break there were like 5 cars vs. the 50+ from the day before.
I feel very fortunate to live over here, so much to do. Although it's mostly sport climbing I am loving it in the Gorge. Also, kinda funny that I saw three of the biggest names in traditional climbing, Croft, Potter, Honnold, this week in the Gorge loving it too.
-
yes you are lucky living so close to the gorge, the gorge is one of my favorite places to climbing, i have been climbing in the gorge since 1991, to date i think i have climbed over 350 routes, and since 2001 i have been able stay at my friend place in bishop by the kragens auto store across the street from where the old vons store use to be, no more sleeping in the dirt for thid old guy :-), it's great to wake up in the morning to a shower and sleeping in a soft bed, since 2005 when marty put out his last gorge book, lots of new routes have poped up, so when i go to the gorge these days i look for new routes that are not in the 2005 book making it feel new and fresh, and it gives me a chance to make a topo of the new stuff at the gorge and share it will other climbers, some of the new routes that amy and i think are really fun are, road wave on the road down to the gorge from the south gate, super fun 2 pitch route to the right of funky cole patina on penstock rock, fun route to the right of environmental terrorist at the banana belt, the fun rope stretcher "70m rope needed" route on the far right on the pub wall, the in my mind the best 5.9 in the gorge, crusher, on the pop tart towers next to 3.b.a., and 3 super fun new routes on the narrows east wall, a 5.9, 5.10b, and a short but super fun 5.11a, i heared about a new 5.10c at the banana belt that i am psyched to check out, so yes you are really lucky :-) happy climbing mike a.
-
Jeff, Your comparison of weekend to weekday out there made me think of the Field of Dreams movie phrase, "If you build it they will come." I've missed the east side though it sounds outta hand weekends. Still, I agree with Mike A., you are lucky to be there especially with time off during the week.
BTW, there was a good link to a Peter Mortimer interview with Hohnold and Peter Croft on ST that I saw a couple weeks ago. Definitely worth looking for... I wonder, did you get a chance to chat with them at all?
Yes, we trudged through the snow and climbed at Chiquito and Mammoth Pools. Blue skies and lots of snow. The roads kind of iffy. Only us out there breaking trail with no other souls in sight.

-
are all those white marks on the slab above JG from rock fall?
-
Munge - That much contrast in the rock isn't realistic to the naked eye. What's pictured for the most part is probably mainly the after effect from brightening the photo in an editor. Without brightening, the picture would be too dark since it was taken around sundown. But I like it. Seems old timey. Or maybe that's mainly from the hammer... :)

Great pics Susan, John! I had to double-check my calendar... it says February. How were the roads?
-
Glad you like the photos. I plan to add more after work.
The roads are bone dry on Minarets but still locked past Mammoth Pools.
For some reason the gate to Grizzly is unlocked and we drove Grizzly to Beasore. We were pretty surprised to find a lot of ice on the extreme North end of Grizzly ( like the last 3/4 mile) and in patches along Beasore. We made it through though.
Totally spring conditions out there. Flowers are blooming that shouldn't be. Crazy year.

Awesome!
Splitter crack on that second pic, very nice.
I need more!

Great pics guys!

Thanks Nate, Yeti and DJ!

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is that a somewhat fuzz or needle covered rock there, susu?
-
Would you believe tribbles again? Looks like a giant caterpillar. But it is only a blend of hummock and needles.
-
(http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/ae47/setageus/P1130047.jpg)
Looking at this pic, I think Grumpkin sort of joins the first line. But when I TR'd the first line, I think I climbed straight up thru where the needles *used* to be, not where J is at in the pic.
-
so you guys tr the thin seam to the right?
How hard did that feel?
-
Thin seam?
Have you seen this crag in person?
Dunno think there is a thin seam.
-
If by thin seam like a long credit card slot, that's a line in a different spot.

This was the alternate start to the overhanging fist crack john lead, which I believe is the photos you posted above?

Sweet shots! Hey, that empty Hornitos explains some things. Hah! Great camouflaged toad shot too.
-
thx, I shot 172 images. Maybe 6 seem well done to me. Michelle has a Nikon too and was showing me what all the dials and diodes do. Someday I'll shoot 172 images, and 171 of them will be good.

Generating some excitement for what the 6th shot is?

I should say, .....you are. But now I sound like Yoda.

Don't know about some of those, but I'd say the third one down is at Disappearing looking at Balloon (obviously).
The pictures are enough to make anyone crazy. All I have to do is hold on another few days and hopefully I'll start getting some pictures together to post myself.
The West of the West appears to be quite popular.
-
SoYo Climber- looking forward to your photos. Reminder-Don't forget to take them.
-
Yeah. Unfortunately taking pictures is something we've always been pretty lax about. There are a couple of routes that I really would like to get some shots on, as I probably won't go back to most of them after they get finished. I'm planning to make an effort this time around.
-

Excellent!
Pleeeeeeeeeze post more pictures people!!!! It is the funnest and most inspirational part of a site like this.
At last count I have about 23,000 climbing photos, mostly boring pictures of sections of rock to reference for drawing, but I am running out of good stuff to post....or willing to post for fear of inspiring "too much"..hehe...most of you know what I mean.
-
See, this is the other part of the problem, and the trick is finding a balance. How to inspire and stoke the psych, while at the same time not over inspiring. Ah yes, you hit the nail on the head. I have another dike I'd like to post pictures of (after I get them), but will need to decide if they'll act like a magnet.
-
For real. I remember not too long ago enjoying winter after winter in Yosemite Valley. John would laugh as he told other climbers how I would try to shush him from speaking so highly of climbing there through the winters. Thought it was the best kept secret - everyone thinking we were going off to a snowy Ansel Adams scene when it was typically springlike & beautiful west side. And look. Pretty darn busy nowadays. Not that it's John's fault of course. Ha ha...
Shuteye is getting sooooo much attention nowadays. Still fun to get lost out there though.
-
By the way, that last shot I posted is at the Balls.
-
Shuteye is getting sooooo much attention nowadays. Still fun to get lost out there though.
Can you elaborate on this, susu? Are you guys seeing or hearing about a lot of traffic up there?
-
This is a purely subjective statement. Grateful I will not have graphs, charts and data to supply on it. I can still count on one hand the number of people we've seen out there since last climbing season, not including those who were out with us. Just noticing posts and mentions across forums and how often we are asked about the area by acquaintances. We do not typically mention this site to acquaintances by the way. Again, this was just a very strong gut level feeling that the so called obscurities we are all thinking we are doing today are not going to remain so obscure for very long. Who knows.
-
Saw 5 cars at Dreamscape parking Sunday. Thin strong looking crew coming from the High Eagle direction at the end of the day.
Nice enough, but didn't get a chance to chat since we were orchestrating beer location and whether to stay up on the ridge as the storm was moving in.
So besides us, that seemed like a lot to me. But I'm a relative noob to the overall area.
John says I need to get out more often and visit other areas. :)
-
Well, there ya go. High Eagle parking area, Chiquito and Big Sleep parking are the areas I've ever noticed the most people... except a couple of times at LE.
-
Cool, thanks for the user assessment guys! :)
Now back to more pics... er, at least I think this thread is about pics?

Hey, nice ones Nate! Is that you climbing?
-
Is that Squaw, Nate? Er, Piyau.
-
It's Amy Strickling following on Snake crack at Piyau (good eye). Jon tends to tilt his camera a lot, but sometimes for cool effect.
-
That is a good eye on the Piyau shot. Now I see it.
The other must be Hidden area... or do I hear another big red buzzer go off.
-
It's Amy Strickling following on Snack crack at Piyau (good eye). Jon tends to tilt his camera a lot, but sometimes for cool effect.
There is the Courtesy Tilt which makes you look radder. Then there is the Tilt Of Shame where you look less so.
-
The other must be Hidden area... or do I hear another big red buzzer go off.
The little chasm is also near Piyau.
I want a red buzzer! Do you guys have one?
-
Oh, oh, did you hear that? Red buzzer going off again. Nate, I'd be happy to give you mine. :)
-
Tilt of Shame - love it. Good name for a moderate slab climb perhaps.

Cobbledik flying up this climb while getting his groove on, in thick soled, hightop tenny shoes no less. Dang.

Because he likes construction projects.

Beautiful shots, I love IR photography. The patchy skies this weekend make it even more contrasty than without. Got any more?
Where the hell did you take that Fuller shot from???!!
-
Is the Shuteye Ridge shot from the gated road a little south of the road to the Eagles on the opposite side of the road? In the burnt area? We were exploring around down there recently and recognize a similar vantage point.
-
Oh wait, never mind. I realize you were way farther east than I thought.
-
Holy shots! Those are great!
-
WOW! Great shots Daniel, the detail is amazing. Dedicated IR camera?
-
Shots taken from the south side of the river.
The camera is an old 6Mp DSLR that I converted. I never did get the focus just right so good shots require some luck. Cost $100 for an IR filter and tons of patience to take the camera apart and put it back together. I think I had it apart about 5 times. The crux is figuring out how to take the camera apart and pull out the sensor.
-
Seems these were taken from across the SJR then, Dan? It's neat to see the infrared images of the fire damage which to the naked eye look cast in infrared already. I wouldn't have noticed the fire damage in your photos except for the burned remains of matchstick tree groves.
That shorty patch of slab in front is what we call the Beehive as there used to be many bee boxes planted around the turnout. Now moved. The area did have some nice camping even with the bees not far off there before the fire. The wildflowers are coming back enforce, and parts of that area are still pleasant I think.
-
Yes, looking across the river. There are two slabs in the foreground. I've never been to either.
Photo with regular type camera from a slightly different location.

A dream within a dream indeed! It went too fast - don't know if I dreamt it all.
It was truly inspiring to watch Sasha get back in the saddle and work her way up p.1 of A Dream Within a Dream after taking a fall and pulling a piece. The gal's got grit!
Great to hang with our gracious hosts and dyed in the wool locals, and to meet many new faces!
And Susu, no pics of 'lil old me is just fine, though Ger may have a few he took with my camera.
But it isn't fine that I missed out on the pools with the gang. :(
Thanks for sharing pics!
-
Nice post Dingus! Nate! So glad to have hung out and climbed w/y'all! Was a great group! Could have spent more time doing all that for sure.
Love Dream Within... Great job Sasha, and I hear Nate you did very well on it too! Would love to see more photos anyone.
Such a hot few days, the little few minutes of sprinkles Sunday were most welcome. Looking forward to getting back out there already.

Anyone done p2 of Gravy Train yet?

Anyone done p2 of Gravy Train yet?
Feel guilty not having done this yet...recently we have been up P1 of GT and done Titanic twice but haven't really had the time to do P2. Soon man, soon. It is prime time at Gray right now.
-
Nice, I miss Gray so much and all that new stuff you been doin too.
If you do the 2nd pitch of Gravy Train ignore or chop the lower first bolt. I put one higher cause the rope kept catching on a flake below but never got back to chop the lower bolt. Also a bolt near the end of the pitch wouldn't go in and is sticking out and needs to go. I but another bolt in it's place higher as well. Just wanted you to know why it kinda looks like a shit show. Can't wait to go back and finish a few things.
-
We saw the shit show the first time we did the "full" P1. I figured you had a plan.

-
So then are these his photos of being out there and not yours? Looks nice out there not even very high up.
-
These are my shots from last weekend
-
Looks like there's room on the back of that thing. hint hint
-
if you want to burn yer britches, sure. the big aluminum thing on the back is a cooler (not for drinks), but for cooling the engine. Snow is either stacked on top of it, or you put your 'scratchers' down to spray snow up on it as you drive. it's kind of a trippy design. These don't have fans to keep the engine cool. Other models do.
-
Looks like fun. Wonder about rentals for something like that.

Hah! If we need a moderator, we in trouble. This place does seem to need some friendly folks currently active out there. Sleepy Shuteye sounds alright to me. Though I miss it there for sure.
Nice shot of the other pass there tho Munge. Keep em coming.

Also, I haven't much checked ST in a while. Making me wonder what is going on over there.

Regarding the dome thread, reckon it's a better time to post up about these places now than any. Come this spring, it could take a while to access many of these places due to snow, and the topic will probably fade back into obscurity some more by then.

what!?
Why aren't we taking time off work to send that rig right now?

Is that the climb "High Cotton"? Why I don't recall you getting out that far with us. Long while ago if so.
Here's another photo not as good of course and sorry about the time stamp. This climb is Wanderlust at Gray Eagle. Yes, the first pitch is one of the best routes anywhere in my opinion.
Key note on gear for it that I don't think is in Graham's guide but probably is mentioned somewhere. Bring a #3 old camelot for a v-slot placement in the face. It takes a #2 if using the brand new lightweight BD cams. This helps entirely with any runout after the traverse. There's even another placement shortly after that one which is similar and good for a #1 or #2 (I forget which but think #2) older BD cam.
I know Wing Feather is a great climb, but there are more stellar first pitch climbs on this formation. Be kinda nice to see someone climbing the lesser starred ones that are better than the fully starred in that guide. Honest.
-
why would older vs newer BD make a difference when the cam lobes haven't really changed? Or have they changed in the green, red, gold, blue sizes? above that yes, but I hadn't seen any change.
Not sure on the route name. I leave keeping track of that stuff to you guys. ;) May 2015 was when.
Hey, did you get my response on the camping beta on 108?
-
No I didn't get your response on my 108 query but would still like to!
Good question on the BD cams. It is a unique and kind of shallow placement. Didn't have the old #3 with me to compare at the time, and I neglected to compare since then. At work, can't do it now... maybe later.

Sent a PM with the info after 2 email attempts seemed to fail because of an smtp problem on my host.

We did Powerline recently at Power Dome: Big Props to Kenny Rose & partner for it! Great rock, and sustained.
Here are a few shots from the first pitches. Deal was I took the first two and John the last two which worked out great.
I'll have to check with him about getting more photos from that day to post.

Well that didn't work and I have to go to work. I'll try again later
-
O cool! I took a look at the photo in the upload section. Nice shot!
I've done that before.... more than once, heh. To fix, click the Mona Lisa button and paste that photo link in the popup window. You probably know all that. But if not or if that doesn't work, I could try it for you too.
By the way, John had me try out a simpler way to upload photos, which is far better. Can you make that method available to others yet, John?
-
I edited your post to link properly, Donutnational. Click the little photo of the mona lisa and paste the link in between what shows up, it should look like this:
[img ]http://www.southernyosemiteclimbing.com/SMF/photo_album_resized/IMG_0372_resized.jpg[/img ]
(There are additional spaces added between the [img] tags in this example so they don't function)
So you guys did Powerline together? We have been going back to Power Dome over and over and over for like a month and have only seen one other party ever.
-
Looking good! That's right around the time we climbed it. Huge testament to a great climb when the first up it want to climb it again and again....
It started to rain ☔️ that Saturday, was it Sep 2 or so, and we were not at all prepared for that when it began in the middle of the route. So glad it stayed nice out after all. Wouldn't want to go down only to backtrack across those unprotectable approach slabs when slippery...
p.s. Neglected to mention, we only had one 70m rope, which would have meant rapping off one bolt w/another to back it up generally spaced far away... Not a lot of other protection found esp. on the first two pitches....
pss... Of course that's our fault for committing to bring one rope instead of two ... I just mention it as for me it added an extra element of excitement with my over-active imagination... 😊
-
Donutnational-
If you guys did Powerline, did you use the bolted anchor on the summit? I couldn't find it as shown in the new guide and SEKI doesn't really have the details drawn in the topo. I suppose there is more than one way to finish that last pitch.
-
John, I've never done powerline. Swinging leads on powerline has been a goal of mine since Kenny and a few others convinced me that being old and out of shape was no excuse to quit climbing. I've been in the parking lot several times planning to climb it but that plan always evaporated by the time I reached the base. The most recent time we retreated to smegmathon. Going up again this weekend, maybe I'll be able to use your pictures as inspiration and actually climb the route. If I do I'll report back regarding the belay for the last pitch.
Thanks for fixing the picture of Kenny, he's a great guy even if Bud lite is his favorite beer.
-
We too have utilized the change-your-mind-on-the-approach technique many times, often when the caffeine from our inspired morning planning is wearing off!
Well it aint going anywhere and its a good route so I hope you give it a run.
How is Smegmathon?
-
Thanks for fixing the picture of Kenny, he's a great guy even if Bud lite is his favorite beer.
Heh heh it's the family default beer - one I'm always happy to crack open.
It's funny that the new guide states something about this being the sport climb on the dome....? Don't recall exact wording. But, on the first two pitches I was looking up to find the next bolt sometimes and could not see it. Had to trust that as the guide states, it's up there, not just somewhere ahead but kind of directly above. It worked out, but didn't feel like a sport climb. Anyway, seems something of a cheeky description in the guide...
Also, I found it to be a thought inducing climb, as I think are the other routes we've done so far on the dome, where I've found myself taking it gradually, thinking ahead a bit to make sure not to puzzle myself into a corner that I could only get out of by falling. Felt kind of like doing FAs in that sense, climbing on Powerdome.
-
That's not much of a pep talk Susan. I was hoping to read something like "it's not that bad, you can do it!" (despite the fact that you've never seen me climb). It's better than one of my friends description which was something like: "there's a few kind of hard spots where if you fall you will get banged up". As for Smegmathon it is an ok route, one 5.10 move with a bolt in your face and no runouts. It's a good route to retreat to if your ambition in the parking lot exceeds your courage at the base.
I think the sport route description is of Hannarama. I first did Hannarama with my then 12 year old daughter. She'd always wanted to climb Power Dome and I said I'd take her up Little Nukey . When we got to the base I didn't remember where Little Nukey went so I picked the route that looked to have the most bolts and ended up doing Hannarma, which I think is the best non horrifying route I've done on Power Dome. A 70 m rope and many quick draws is enough to link the 1st 2 pitches making one really good pitch and avoiding the only semi hanging belay, which sits just below the crux.
-
O yeah, sorry bout that. Well, having only led the first two pitches and followed the last two of Powerline, I was unfortunately glad not leading p3&4... which I hope was more owing to 'second head' as we call it... Not a pleasure mind you. I've mentioned this before a couple of times, rather "second head" refers to the funk experienced when not leading, yet cruxing mentally about the potential difficulty of leading said route...
Anyway, I think if you feel as you do about Hannaramic, then seriously, go for pitches 1, 2 and/or 4 of Powerline... if shy of P3 the cruxiest pitch.
I enjoyed Hannaramic very much even tho once again there were hmmm, sensations of, 'is this going to go ok, where is that next pro, and it doesn't always look like it will be all there..." but is.
Hmmm... I'll see if I can find pictures of Hannaramic. But a lot of the photos of Power Dome look alike.
-
I was looking for photos of Hannaramic but ran across these photos which I took of two people climbing Little Nukey the day we climbed Hannaramic. Do these shots happen to be of you & Kenny, Donutnational from middle of last month?

I think they are. Little Nukey is another route we did instead of powerline. I will show these to my wife to prove we actually climbed.

Well, the last photos were from Smegmathon. I think it's more than an ok route. I found the crux, cruxy and the whole thing an enjoyable romp for sure! Nice job putting that up Donutnational!
And Donutnational, you are right, I was wrong about that sport description which was for Hannaramic not for Powerline. Sorry about that...
To be open though, no routes have felt to me to be sport bolted on PD. Although most often the routes we've done on PD do seem to have protected cruxes, there are also definite do not fall zones on every one of the routes. Tuolomne has this sort of standard of risk going on with it as well, yet so many people head there to do routes all season long while we've only seen Donutnational & Kenny Rose, other than our own friends, on PD this summer over the course of a half dozen or so routes we've done there on PD this season. What the heck is that about? O wait, no Supertopos!?!
-
Thanks Susan. I thought it might be that or the route (solar power?) which crosses it, but not confident enough to guess. The route is special to me as it was my first FA and first bolt placement. We had eight or nine bolts, some pins and youthful enthusiasm. I'm glad Kenny and Barry convinced me that retro bolting it was a good idea otherwise I would have never got climbed it in the 21st century. I just wish we didn't name it while under the influence.
-
That's cool to hear some things about the setting of the FA! Youthful enthusiasm and drink put a nice light on the name I would say. Not all climbs can be named so beautifully as Sons of Yesterday, a fave, or Song to a Morning Star... Laughing just now recalling some of the worse names...

I will say that the bouldering is stellar at Cliff Lake, near Christian Lake and Island Lake.
-
Approach beta appreciated D! Have fun. Weather looks good for it. Had hoped to get to Hoffman, but may have to wait a weekend or two.
-
obelisk approach is great right now. Such a great long weekend. Rob- feel free to email or call me if you want details. I'll try to find time to post up pics and approach/trail information soon. But, life is a bit hectic here in Santa Rosa. Our house and neighborhood is OK, but we are pretty close to the two fires and it is gonna get windy tonight.
-
So sorry to hear it! You guys stay safe. Hope your home and neighborhood make it through all right. Want to hear that they do!
-
The smoke today from those fires is very thick in the East Bay, even irritating the throat and causing headaches.
Can't imagine it there.

As a few of you know, I print some t-shirts. A hobby. I have been trying to think of an iconic SOYO graphic to print but I can't come up with one. I'm trolling for ideas, images and or artwork. Gerry J is an artist and I am not so if I am lucky he has some input. I would love Eagle Beaks but it just doesn't have pop. Anyway, if anybody has ideas or graphics, I'm in.
I prefer to only print one color and no greyscale.
Some examples here:
http://dammerr.com/swag.html (http://dammerr.com/swag.html)
-
Your website is looking streamlined and polished. I like the section "A Little About Me" very much.
Did I mention how much I like the blue color and logo of the tee shirt shown there? I nabbed one of those for myself over the red which I also quite like. Thank you very much!
That would be great if you could get some help from Gerr.
Gosh, iconic is the Eagle Beaks for sure. I think it's stunning.
To me also the Doodle as Royal Robbins called it which probably has less pop than the beaks.
Picture of it is here: http://www.southernyosemiteclimbing.com/ (http://www.southernyosemiteclimbing.com/)
Also the layered rock such as the Talon which is other places as well. Y'know, more and more I like the nest of Eagles that you mention. Terrible photo here but was a quick last minute snap from last weekend:
If only I could draw, I'd make it look something more like a nest of eagles cracking open out of their eggshells and the crack caused by a Dammerr...
-
Seems like a good starting point....
"nest of eagles cracking open out of their eggshells and the crack caused by a Dammerr... "

Also like the characteristic line of the Shuteye skyline for a teeshirt.... I have a photo of it as a shadow somewhere I've been meaning to find.

BTW I have been meaning to mention that if you post a photo and it displays sideways even after you rotate it in the site's photo album you can add ?1 at the end of the link like this:
[img ]http:/www.southernyosemiteclimbing.com/SMF/photo_album_resized/IMG_1671_resized.jpg?1[/img ]
Your browser won't properly rotate your photo until the next time you open your browser since it is a casched image and this fools it into thinking it is a different image.

funny last saturday i was at wagners for a burg and a beer and swimming at the reservoir man it was hot down there!!!

I believe. MMP is pretty low elevation, but that area by the dam gets a good breeze usually if you happen to be in the area. I think you already tried these lines though, IIRC?

Took my very dear little friend on his first trad climb, his first multi-pitch and first rappel (fireman's belay). Dude cleaned gear and rocked a DAMMERR t-shirt all weekend but the old greybeard had to climb with the pack.

For cute Nate! Great to see your scrambling buddy photos! And early season with snowy Sierra backdrop. Hope by some miracle the smoke clears up for you when you get out there soon.
Seems that no where is exempt from at least a haze, though not able to be at all these places at once: Tahoe,108,120, Soyo, Courtright...
Wonder how was the air quality at the Balls, Mike?

Up near Courtright on Friday and today. Skies are clear of smoke.

The last couple days super clear no smoke still hot, was up there yesterday nice blue sky's.

Wait, someone climbed one of our routes?!?! Is that the one right of the black streak? Nice!
I really miss our camera now....

Yes great pictures as always - your Chain Lakes photo is especially nice!
Sessions! Glad you enjoyed the climbs. That one in the photo looks like one we did with Gerr. Really enjoyable times there.
