Cora Lakes beta?
« on: July 11, 2019, 10:20:04 pm »
Got a family backpack trip coming up and this is the destination.

1. Any rock worth TR gear and ultralight rack? At 4.5 miles this is do-able but if the rock is crap or less than 25 feet, its not worth it.
2. Any blocs and boulders worth bringing shoes and chalk?
3. Any recent skeet reports from near there?
4. Best day hike options from the lake?

thx!

Rob,

Looks like a cool place but it's only a short hike. There is a legal 4WD trial to the top of Timber Knob.

I once hiked to the to of Timber Knob and was disappointed to find that people were driving up there.

Not from right there but I was a bit south at similar elevation at Cliff Lake and Rock Lake yesterday and the mosquitoes were bad at mid day with a light breeze blowing.  I would guess they are bad at Cora lake, I hope I am wrong.

will look for that formation. Is it in the wilderness boundary?

Timber Knob is on the wilderness boundary. The 4WD road runs right along the boundary north of Timber Knob. The USGS quad to look for is titled Timber Knob.

I should probably delete my posts above since they are nonsense. I wrote them when out of town and was depending on my faulty memory.

I have been to Cora Lakes a few times. I was there in 1972 but have no recollection of it. I took my kids there in the 1990's and took some photos that are long gone. I hiked up to Isberg Pass in October of 2015 and took a photo of the lake next to the trail (posted below). I recall it being pretty flat and a bit swampy so I would expect mosquitoes. Sadler Lake further up looks more promising for cragging (photo below). McClure Lake is surrounded by rock but is a depressing place. The CCC's built a dam at McClure in the 1930's so it is a reservoir. In October the water was low and the lake was surrounded by mud flats.

There are some nice hiking peaks up there with good views.

Before you get the Cora Lakes, you will go through The Niche. You might find some bouldering and top rope spots there.

The Niche? Sounds cool. I'll bring shoes then. Short hike, but have to save space for beer and booze so luxuries like spare underwear just can't go on the trip!
