Found a 1923 printing of the 1904 Kiaser Peak map. This is the 15 minute map that covers Shuteye. It's 10 Mb so you might want to right click and save.

Found at this beta webpage. I can't get the zoom to work so it is pretty hard to find things.

Old maps are cool because they show things that are no longer there like old cabins, rail lines, etc. There are earlier USGS maps but they are generally of more important things like developed areas and mining districts.
The most amazing thing is that these were produced before aerial photography. Somebody had to physically go out and measure elevations, coordinates and sketch terrain. The contours are all basically drawn by hand.

Fun stuff. The zoom works for me. Neat to see where all the old trails/roads went, like the one over Little Shuteye Pass from Grizzly Meadow.

Awesome.
There is a very old county map in the Starbucks in Oakhurst. Really fun to see the old family names and recognize how some peaks, roads and creeks got their names.

This is cool. Reminds me of an old map at the pack station near the Balls. Maybe next time we'll snap some photos of it to post here.
