Climbing Gear Vendors

FYI - Just a plug for a favorite - Backcountry.com often lets you price match. They ship free in only two or so days to the Bay Area, and it's hard to beat that they are tax free. They are also real easy about exchange/returns.

Anyone favorite recommendations?

We would like to get some sewn slings replaced on some still great old gear... used to have that done by the gear manufacturer but no more.

Jerry can speak up if he sees this, but he is friends with Larry Arthur, owner(?) of Mountain Tools, and recommends them for sewn sling replacement. He's also recently turned Larry onto SoYo climbing, so maybe you can coordinate meeting him at a crag, hand him the gear and save on some shipping costs.

I also still have some cams that need runner replacement that I've been meaning to send...

I recently bought some sewn slings from Russ Walling at Fish. The price was good and he threw in 4 free runners. It took awhile but I had told him I wasn't in a hurry. He re-slings cams too. You could send him an email and check his turn around time.

Der. I remember talking to Larry last year when we climbed with him at the Balls and I now recall him saying he does re-slinging. We should give him a call. Our rack is starting to look like a booty rack.

Back when Black Diamond re-sewed slings on their cams, they almost totally ruined a trip of ours (to I believe Utah) by waiting until the very last second to send us our finished cams back. We gave them weeks more than they asked for and communicated with them constantly out of worry. I believe they eventually had to Next Day Air them back to us so we would have cams for our trip. At least they didn't charge us after all that.

Mountain Tools is also a great local resource.  We enjoyed meeting Larry and Jane last year.  Later, Larry sent us a sample to try of a unique French bolt hanger (Bonier spelling? Pronounced Bowneeyeah?) which seemed like a good design, but Greg Barnes found this hanger not to be reliable for high-use areas for some reason??? Only ever seen this used once before up SPH.

The Fish is a great recommendation too! I've read the turnaround warning on the site before, though, I should just ask about it but this time of year has to be slow. Perusing that website... lots of interesting links there.  http://www.fishproducts.com/index1.html

Another vote for Mountain Tools. I climbed with Larry last year at Pinnacles and had a great time. I have also ordered a good a amount of gear from Mountain tools.  Larry is really good with shoe sizing and recommendations. He is a great resource and always ready to talk about climbing.

I also get quite a bit of gear from Pacific Edge Climbing gym.  You get 10-15% off just being a member.  I recommend talking with Scott Lappin, Tom Davis if you have specific tech questions. Very friendly and have tons of experience with different gear.

thin metal, but light weight. High use would destroy it if people lowered off it. It's only meant for rapping off of.

Larry at Mountain Tools did all of our cams a couple of years ago for a good price and kept the color coding correct. Plus it is a small business and super people! Easy to put it off way to long, I got mine re-slung and new draws when Lynnea made me leave my cams and draws at home.
