Nice photos of the ridge. Yes, that's Sean on Chiquito.

Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye PICS thread
Post by: NateD on March 12, 2013, 01:28:05 pm
Left to right: West Fuller Butte, East Fuller Butte, Companion Domes.
All seen below to the East/Northeast when up on Shuteye, so not part of Shuteye.
They belong in the "West of the San Joaquin Gorge" section. Susu broke the rules. :)

So I should put that in the right category but can't from my phone right now. I think the photo was taken from Tranquility Dome. John thinks it's from Mammoth Pools bridge. It looks like there are even more than three domes, so the companion domes have their own names, right? Friendship? What others and which are which?

One of the best weekends....EVER!

Sean: "What the f*ck John?....you didn't even make it to the high point?!?"
John: "I'm sorry Dad! I'll try harder next time...honest!"

Never gets old! (Of course, John is yawning at this point after I've rehashed it a billion times.)

Slightly different. Some saturation and lighting effect. Edited out sensor dot too that was in the sky.

I like the position of Sean that I captured, but not particularly fond of the framing of the image or the saturation I settled on so far.

Great to see there was a series of those shots. Really cool.
Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye PICS thread
Post by: NateD on April 05, 2013, 08:55:12 am
I think the framing on the last one (and Sean's position) is pretty unique. But it would have been pretty stellar as a vertical also, with more cliff below Sean. Great angle on these shots. I grow tired of the typical climber focused shots from above without much context/landscape.
Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye PICS thread

I agree Nate. That would be a good guide shot if it was a portrait view. Probably wouldn't have the same cool effect though.

Nice one! The stone looks amazing. Lot of gold and red in that last.

Also, on the last shot of Sean with added saturation, it is great with or without. Of that series, I am most fond of the golden tone in the earlier post with the added saturation and wonder if that tone would work for the last one posted of Sean.

Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye PICS thread
Post by: mungeclimber on April 10, 2013, 11:46:33 am
I don't know, had I read the route correctly, I could have avoided that hold that broke that resulted in the fall.

In contrast to my fall on Reeds many years ago, I deliberately had to commit to wet holds and fell as a result. In that case I don't consider the fall to be my fault, per se. So I feel ok saying "I have lead p2 of Reeds direct" even though I fell. I don't feel a need to re-lead that particular pitch.

quibbling over details, I know. But for some a fall is a fall, is a fall, and thus it would be incorrect to say "I lead" that route this weekend. So I feel the need to climb it again without falling.

Post by: susan on April 10, 2013, 02:35:53 pm
You did lead that route, no aid, tho you fell.... I didn't register that at the time.... You done guuuuud anyway! Natural cleaning process... You got it and you know it... next time.

I've played on this with my boys, setting up a 5.6ish TR on those cracks in the center. There could be a few moves of 5.9+ at the start of a few parts, easing up really fast. Super mellow and friendly for young 'uns. I'd by absolutely flabbergasted if I was the first to play on this roadside slab, which still I'm sure most blaze on by for more challenging rock up the road. Didn't seem to warrant any lead climbs IMO, but I debated putting in a bolted anchor on the unprotectable right side for TRs.

For those that are interested, the Shuteye Peak Fawn Lily is only found on Shuteye Ridge and at no other place in the world. It is not officially endangered but super rare and should be left alone if possible.

They are going bonkers right now and tend to like the bases of crags. I do my Ninja dance when walking through patches, trying to avoid trampling them.

It is endemic to Madera County, California, where it grows in isolated populations along the San Joaquin River and its tributaries in the Sierra Nevada. One of its common names refers to Shuteye Peak, one of very few places it exists. The plant was not described until 1990.

This is from a really trippy series of shots we took from the top of Red Feather of Red Eagle. The knobs are out of control around here. Most of the right half of this shot is the "Breast Feather".

This is one of the coolest summits I have been on on the ridge. 360 degree views. We found the handle from a smoke canister on the summit but left it there. We couldn't figure out how it got there than dropped by helicopter. Jeff found an old smoke canister near the Red Dihedral and there is another one on the south side of Gray too. ? ? ?

Fyi - To get down from where we took this shot, we led back down the formation on 4th or easy 5th class sw corner, placing gear for the second, careful of loose rock on the lower third.  That formation has been treated voluntarily as off limits during the year til about July due to perigrine.

Slightly doctored rather hastily - bumped saturation, sharpened ever so slightly, and darkened the overexposed sky/clouds. Don't know why the right edge goes so dark in the original.
Anyhow, I'm quite certain this was taken right before we all rapped. I recall John carefully deciding on what gear to take.

Mike, Runnel Vision is just south of the Big Sleep.  As you hike up the Pass trail not to far up there is a slab of rock you walk across that reminds me of a whales back,  go right through the woods following cairns all the way.   It may take an hour your first time but after that more like 30min hike.  The hike is kinda cool I think and the hidden little valley below the wall is beautiful and there is also some cool crack bouldering there. You can also approach from above, it is below the Fish an area Slater developed but it is longer that way.  My  cairned trail is also the fastest approach to the Eagle beaks from the Big Sleep parking.

There was a time when guys with pink drills couldn't even drill in public. We have come a long way.

Next issue up, why do you insist on wearing a tutu when you climb with Big Pinky?

Welcome Sneville!

John/Sue,
Where is the climb on the 4th picture on this thread?  I want to climb that crack.

That is the first pitch of Seriously Old School on the Bastion, probably the best 5.9 crack on the ridge. I mean, just look at it!

Here is one from "ThunderBelly"  Put that on the list for bolts to be replaced (Thanks John!).
If I put it off long enough, someone from the ASCA will do it.

BTW, Sneville, I am still bummed you one-upped my name for our route on Red Eagle, Redline. Your name Redlinin is so cool sounding it somehow made ours sound lame. I might have to change it. Where is your line Redline John?  Is it up and right on red eagle?  Did we do redlinin before redline?  How do I get a picture in that format if it is not on some website like photo bucket?

Yes, Redline is up and right and we were on it like a week or two before Redlinin'. It is now back on the "Unnamed" list so Redline is no more. Too close to Redlinin.

Did you guys ever come up with a name for your climb to the left of it, the 10a?

How do I get a picture in that format if it is not on some website like photo bucket?

I don't understand your question. What format are you referring to?

Susan, Sick pic with the moon in the back drop. Adds so much to the photo. That route looks toofer.

Sat I went to Aerie and then later to Lost Eagle after a dip in the pools. Awesome day.

Thanks for the help on the pics. I was wondering how you guys made them large.

The route with the black streaks was an FA by Grahm Doe but the pic is of Jimmy(unk last name from Bay area who is a photographer). Don't remember the name of the route. Tom Addison got the second on it after warming up on Ugly Monkey in other pics. I believe that is one of Mike A.'s routes.

At Lost Jimmy & Tom did a .10a on the right side and Grahm and I did Don't be a Turkey and then another to the left. First time at Lost......what an awesome place. Can't beat those pot holes. Gotta admit I was sketched on my first dive into that little deep pool.

Daveytree-
To make your photos full size, modify the links for your photos in your post like this:

Yours have the "mob1119" in the early part of the link-
Code: [Select]
http://mob1119.photobucket.com/albums...............
Change the "mob" to "i" like this:
Code: [Select]
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/...........................
The "mob" is only for viewing on phones, and the "i" is for full size.

We would love to view your photos in full size. Thanks!

Both Jim and Tom were really cool guys. Tom grows crazy fruit from all over the world. He brought some crazy orange fruit that looked like a cherry tomato wrapped in a wax paper shell that tastes a.little lime a blue berry and grows in Peru. So Fricken good.

Mike, the pools are awesome. I could have stayed there the rest of the day. The water was like 70-75 degrees. It was like a pool.

Happy for you that you got to check them out, Daveytree.

I do think that the pools were the only thing that the Ridge really had to lose and Lost Eagle should have been kept out of the guidebook. It will be a sad day when you can't even park and go in there. I have two photos of a day that there were 10 cars parked there and we had to leave because of that since no one could get out. That was about 4 years ago and when you only could have learned about it by word of mouth.

Sorry to be the guy predicting doomsday, but we really feel like we are saying goodbye to Lost Eagle this year.

This is one technique to make a climb have a really runout first pitch, start with the second pitch first. It actually panned-out just fine.

The pools were not to be mentioned in the guidebook, and really aren't, due to concerns about other local user groups (non-climbers). However, Jerry's Swimming Hole Wall is included, which pretty much says there are great swimming holes there. Truthfully the pools have had FAR more promotion online over the years, through all the talk and pics on forums including this, than the guidebook ever will, IMO.

I enjoyed the pools with my 3 boys several weeks ago, and had them all to ourselves - no other cars up there. But I too fear they will be overrun as word continues to spread. Go out and find more pools folks, they are out there, undoubtedly. John, surely you knew almost all of the owners of the 10 cars there at once, no? Hope it's a rare instance.

What is done is done. You know that you cant avoid the pools if you go there but before, you couldn't find it if you didn't have directions. Your old topo didn't even have directions. I can get a photo online of the Methuselah tree, the oldest tree in the world, but no one will tell you where it is.

I didn't recognize a single vehicle of the 10.

There are some fine swimming holes where Grizzly Creek meets the S. Fork of the Merced River. Drive out Sky Ranch Road 9.5 miles past Fresno Dome. Park where the road makes a hairpin turn at the north end of the ridge on the east side of Grizzly Creek. Hike 1.2 miles down the ridge heading northwest and hit the creek just above the river. It is 1.2 miles due west of Chiquito Lake. Some of the best pools I've ever seen. It is an easy hike on an open ridge. Take the kids.

I went down there a few years ago looking for climbing but didn't find anything worth the hike. I did find a stocked camp and lots of bear sign.

I am not so sure, Nate. Mentioned, sure, but I have only recognized shots of the pools and have never seen a shot labeled. No directions, ever. Mike A. seems to have the most shots posted of LE but even then, you couldn't find the place from them and there is no LE on any map.

EDIT: I immediately saw a labeled shot of Mikes right after I posted this. Oh well.

One thing I appreciated from the info on RC.com was the lack of directions to anywhere. Unintentionally brilliant. If you think about it, it is a great mechanism to protect a place. If you wanted to pursue a place that you liked in a photo or read a good description, you could contact someone who has been there and they would hopefully share the particulars on the place, or not, if their shit detectors were buzzing.

Well John, one thing is for sure - the pics attract attention (far more than words), and people do start to ask. Everyone who has been there has shared with friends, and those friends then share and word travels remarkably fast. That's one thing I've learned. Climbers love to talk, me included, for better or for worse. We simply know how to have fun, and how can we not talk about our fun experiences, eh?  ;D

Secrets are pretty tricky to keep, esp. with a lot of climbers/friends mulling about. We'll see what the future holds.

Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye Ridge PICS thread
Post by: John on July 26, 2013, 03:08:49 pm
Nate
I hear you about photos attracting the most attention. Are there any of LE on this site? I could be wrong but I don't remember seeing any.

Ironically, I would love to see pictures of LE!

I also would love for people to be introduced to them and I would also like people to never go there, etc, etc. I am perfectly aware of how I am being irrational, I just don't want to reflect on the ol days when we could go there and be alone without music, broken glass and garbage floating around.

One thing is for certain about the exposure is that the pools will never be better off from it. That is a constant battle with nature and the outdoors in general with no clear answers except to lock everything up and no one wants that. Sorry, I just wanted to vent.

morning all, amy and i went and check out the pools at grizzly creek, long hike down there, long hike out, 1200 foot down and out, if  you have small kidz, i do not think they would be psyched on the hike, checked out chquitio lake and grizzly lake as well, before we went climbing at fresno dome, never been to the end of the road on skyranch, beautiful drive, checked out slater's so called "best 5.8 at shuteye", at dreamscape dome, not the best 5.8 at all, if your a 5.8 climber, and your first time at dreamscape dome, super hard to find it, and real hard to get on it, hate to be all haten on tom slater, but if i was going to blah blah blah about me mega classic at shuteye's BEST 5.8. i would hook people up with awesome beta a cool topo, and show youall a map that would get you there :-(, i do not know, i guess that's just the way i roll, something like captian feather is a ton way best!!!, and the routes on the first wall you come up to at dreamscape, the starts are pretty flippen hard with no feet, but once you get going awesome edge climbing, the one second to the last route to left is a real good route, and the start move seemed to be the crux move maybe 12a, i want to see how my rating stack up to grahmy's and the rest you shuteye people??? when i get he's book.  happy climbing mike a.

Hi Mike
Man, we had a very similar weekend and I think we saw you on Central Camp rd on friday evening going the opposite direction. We couldn't see inside the cab but I am pretty sure you were waving. You seem to be fond of waving!

No, really, we went to Dreamscape, Chiquito Lake and Quartz Mtn. with the half hearted intent of going to Dans suggested Grizzly Creek/Merced swimming holes but didn't have the directions with us and didn't feel like winging it. We only went to Chiquito Lake and learned that it is not of the swimming variety as you likely know. Too bad we missed you.

Its funny, I think we climbed the same climbs there, too. At Dreamtime Wall we climbed Edge of Dreams on gear and one of the bolts and TR'd the 12a for a while. We really liked the 12a. The start is the crux for sure.

At Hawk Tower we did all of the climbs but Narcoleptic. I love how the rock down there is painted with all kinds of colors.

Awesome, and almost so perfect it looks manmade. The good old pink tricam in active mode would probably work too.

Not Dickens Cider,  Gray Expectations.  Dicken's Cider is to the right.

As far as the names,  I guessed people would get the play on words but my buddy Art didn't so maybe others don't.  Gray expectations is a play on Great Expectations written by Charels Dickens thus the second route name which is a funny, to me anyway, joke a friend of mine told me years ago that I think of when ever I hear the name Dickens.  Sorry to those it may offend.  RIP Paul.

I wasn't climbing. That was at Grey that day I couldn't climb. :(

It's right off the ledge. Big right facing corner. John does a killer move flipping the lip up higher on the p2. I think I have that pic around here too.

Since I'm not climbing, I'm going thru pics. Might see some more in between gym trips and errands.

have fun this weekend.

The irises (or iri?he he) must be the blue and white ones with a strip of yellow?

The Dogwoods are really tricky to get their delicate look to show up in a photograph. At least with my skills or lack thereof.

Back to flowering plants; in regard to smell, I think the Buckeyes are hard to beat. Sadly, it's so dry this year that the buckeyes are dropping their leaves already.

I remember a discussion with Jeff about where the title of Southern Yosemite came from besides a portion of the area being South of the Yosemite border. It is sort of an odd title if you think about it. This sign suggested the title to be an official one, at least as far as the Dept. Of Signs is concerned.

IF the common use of the term amongst climbers came from the title of the Spencer guide, that book does include stuff in Yosemite NP like Wawona Dome, Mt. Starr King, and Bunnell Point, as you all know. I always like seeing that sign - like it's saying "you're almost there".

All pics are of Rogelio at Hidden Eagle. The crack, I confess, is 2nd class at most, atop the dome, rotated and faked to look well... cool.  ;D Roger is actually leaning down on his hands. Many low angle splitters up there - if we can only round up a bunch of guys to tip the dome quite a bit more, we'd have some fine crack climbs to do.

Title: Milky Way Wall
Post by: Mark T on June 17, 2014, 12:42:32 pm
The approach took us about an hour, going slow.  The start was easy to find.  Going up the second pitch, I exited the dihedral about 2/3rds up, unsure of the pro for the 5.8 crux, which I couldn't identify.  Besides, I was tempted by an anchor off to the right on the slab, which turned out to be a Sons of Thunder anchor.  The bouldery move up over the dihedral possibly 5.8.  The real second pitch anchor was another forty feet up and back to the left, near the base of a left slanting crack, which leads to fields of knobs.  I never did find the third or fourth pitch anchors.  I was looking for a third pitch anchor on the big ledge straight above me, to the right of a large patch of bushes—although way off to the left, to the left of the bushes, through more knobs, was an anchor, which I reached by clambering inelegantly through the brush.  It had rappel rings on it, going where, I didn't know.  It may have been the correct third pitch anchor, and the guidebook description a little vague.  The fourth pitch again slanted left through knobs, steep at first and then led to the topout, though I didn't see anchors at all there. Didn't really need them.  Getting to the gully descent left was also pretty easy.  No bushwhacking the whole day.  And I brought too much gear as usual.  The next day we took it even easier, and went to Eagle's Nest from the Shuteye Pass Trail, and climbed the short, sport route, Space Cadet 5.7, and top roped the 10b to the left, which seemed hard for the grade for me, but we only get outdoors 5 weekends a year.  We're going back in July, and are hoping to do the Southeast Face of North Eagle Beak, though the guidebooks seem a little sketchy about what's there.  If anyone has topo info about the routes there , I'd appreciate it.  For us, a great weekend.

Please donate your old cord to the BAF.

Bay area Fixers.

We treat varmin with respect, offer our food, don't pee on them etc...

In return, they don't go all fat kid on the birthday cake in regards to our fixed lines.

What color, size, age is the donation cord?  I want to inform our members and possibly get it on the roster very soon.

This is on the 4th pitch of Escher's.

*FYI - A reminder that the guidebook has a couple of notations on this climb that would cause trouble if followed. One of them regards the 4th pitch. Take the path of least resistance when you come to the blank face pictured in this section, rather than following the guidebook's advice to not follow the easy ramp left. The most protectable path is to follow the easy ramp left, place more pro there, then launch onto the face to gain the next pro in the crack above.

He jumped out for a minute when we drove up and then went right back in. We drove right up to the can and laid down the horn, he looks up and goes right back to munching! Kept honking, kept eating. Gave up after a while since he ended up totally ignoring us.

Then Alabama Hills must have had one whopper of a fire!

I would imagine that there were some unfortunate conditions to get a fire hot enough to alter the grain structure of the rock. I  once learned that Manzanita is one of the hottest burning wood in the sierras due to its extremely high density. The Native Americans found it to be the best wood to use for kilns for pottery.

Come on over, lets do it again! Fun fun fun!

Yep, no skiing yet for us. Maybe this storm will pan out. Just horizontal spittle so far but tonight is when it's spose to hit.

What route is that above your leading Sue? Nice looking stone. Also looking well protected. Missing that Shuteye rock. Just clipping bolts in the ORG for me these days. Hurt my wrist on a new route and didn't lay off and now it wont heal. Can't seem to lay off on a few new projects but I need to. Finished two new routes this season so far. There is a popular and very fun 10c called, excuse me, Show Us Your Tits. I named my route that I put up to the left of it Thanks for the Mamories. I was also thinking of calling it Big or Small We Like Them All or just Men Are Such Pigs. With all the time I spent there cleaning the choss I have yet to see a single boob.

Speaking of Choss, there is a ton of rock here with Robs name all over it.

Speaking of Choss, there is a ton of rock here with Robs name all over it.

So very much want to get back to the ORG. We were thinking about it over tgiving, but then got sick.

My first route in the ORG... Gorgeous. This was one of my first road trips with friends from REI. We hit the ORG on the way up to Lover's Leap. Such a good time. I wish I had the names of all the climbers we ran into on that trip. The one guy at LL, that showed me the Lord of the Rings boulder problem. The guy that lead a bunch of things at Donner for us, and I rose to the challenge of those 5.11s on TR. This is like just out of high school. I was such a grom, but it was way fun.

Anyways, Gorgeous. Stunning line. Got stymied at the first crux, moved down, then pushed through. Got smoking pumped near the top on the easy ground. Luckily I brought a yellow TCU and put it in a pocket up there somewhere. I'm not sure we did much else that day. We pushed on thru to LL that night sleeping on the side of the road at some point. The next morning.. MIND BLOWN... by LL. Barely anyone there. Got on The Line, without any lineup. Amazing time.  Just the start of many road trips, but I just don't go to LL anymore since the ST guides came out.

Sorry, thread drift there.

Don't know the name of that route nor rating in the last photo John posted. Believe it to be done by Jerry A. Stunning rock right there, that is for sure.

By the way, a latest name I just thought of for that route John & Sean and I did together last time we were three of as at Minerva: Puppet on a String. Whaddya think?

Snow fail. When are we going to get the real deal?

Also, photo fail. My photobucket free site is full, and I haven't found a free site I like better for linking photos yet to add new ones. Plus, every time I'm online lately to forum hop, the Christmas imp in me gets held hostage by promos and shopping. It's all good... almost done with shopping!

This is "Big Lunk" on Delk Dome. A very interesting and physical climb. Starts as an undercling flake then becomes a looooong (like 300+' long), low angle chimney and OW. Super fun "reverse-slinky" path you take with regular body-side directional changes. A bunch of wild movement unique to chimney climbing.
First pitch:

Somewhere in the middle:

The angle at end of the chimney forces you to pretty much climb sideways until you can escape onto the summit:

Dan,
The handsome corner is the descent route (3rd or 4th class perhaps, walk off) on the right side of Hidden Eagle. Rog and I did some fake tilted-camera "climbing" shots on that once that got a few folks hot and bothered, due to it's cleanliness.  :) :)  I'll post one here.

I have been by the other small crag as well - a good walk. Done any climbing in those parts?

Maybe it's just lunch time, but that rock sometimes reminds me of the best cookie I ever had. Looked something like this photo, except it was more the color of the rock than simply chocolate. I think it was what's called a carmelized turtle cookie - was given one free up at Snowshed by a local baker who happened to be handing them out. Wish I knew the recipe or where to get em. Anyway, nice shot!

When I first saw that tunnel I knew it wasn't a core power-producing part of the dam since the power lines coming out of it are a really thin gauge and very little water exits it. I think that tunnel probably has a small turbine to power some local buildings and devices like pumps and lights. Most of the water goes 7+ miles down the canyon in a big tunnel to the Mammoth Pumphouse #8.

The view from Red Dihedral on Red Eagle. The little formation is Red Feather or "The Eaglet". The Eaglet has one of the most spectacular summits in Southern Yosemite BTW.

Haven't done Red Feather. Looks like a cool summit. Spied it from Gray a few times.

In the bottom left of the pic is the top of that free standing pillar. Anything up that yet? It is only like 50'-60' from what I can remember.
Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye Ridge PICS thread
Post by: susan on June 08, 2015, 09:27:20 am
DaveyTree, That's funny you mention it. Towers are the coolest. Yeti and I mentioned being really interested in it a couple of times. It looks like a fun tower as viewed from Gray above it. Thought I spied the base on the approach to Minerva once, but not sure as it didn't look quite so good from that vantage point. It deserves a closer look by someone. Three others sides might yield the goods.

Also, there were perigrine on the eaglet, but I remember hearing that they are believed to move on in only another month or so.

DaveyTree-

I saw the rear of that tower and it is attached to more rock so it is not really a free standing formation. I think you could climb it from the rear with minimal climbing. Would still be fun to get up there, right?

Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye Ridge PICS thread
Post by: jeff on June 12, 2015, 10:19:40 pm
The sorta spire. Go in on the East side at ground level and makes a 90 bend inside to the north. Can pop out on the north face but about 30' or so off the deck.

Gotta have a zombie plan, you know , when shit hits the fan.

I am so checking out the hidden passageway in the zombie tower.

Hey Jeff, I remember you saying you and the Monster found a smoke grenade somewhere on the Red Dihedral. We found it on the second pitch belay in some blocks. Is that also where your face climb out of the Dihedral starts?

We found another smoke grenade up on the south face of gray and a handle from one is still at the summit of red feather. They are so rusted they must be really old. Probably some training exercise?

Sweeet! I want to check that thing out. Sounds cool, especially if you can add it into a route.

I agree the smoke grenades are probably from some training. It would be interesting to find out when they were used. I have connections that would be able to identify the model and when it was in use. Any picks of them?

My zombie plan was pretty much just to head for the hills, but sounds like they're already up there.

So that tower has some caving adventure, eh. I'd go in if you went first and gave the all clear. No sign of it being a den from time to time, except for the zombies? Really cool that the passageway leads to an opening 30 feet up above the deck. I'd like to see that in person.

I forgot all about that smoke grenade. I think it was there at the start of the variation. Would be cool to know the story on those...never will though.

Would be fun to check that Zombie plan formation out again, it's been so long. It was back when Josh and Kev had that multi week spell at Gray. It was the first time we climbed together. Slack Ping!!! Good times.

Pale Man, do tell.
It is a mixed 11b (or so) immediately left of Eschers that we finished last year but we are working our way up to the summit. We were working on P2 a little this last weekend so it should be done no later than the Fall of 2042. You would love it, Jeff it is totally your type of line. It is one of the many lines on Gray that look like dark, unattractive rock from below but is clean, golden knobs when you are on it or looking downward. Three cruxes of 11b?, 10+, 10+. Good stuff.

Titanic P1.

I suppose if the giant death flake on P2 gets the title of "the sail" then this feature should be called "the rudder", right?

Loving the pics!

The Titanic with it's "rudder" is one of the main lines that caught my eye the first time I walked the base of Gray. I was quite bummed at first when these new people kept showing up at Gray but they seemed cool. Especially bummed at those that were able to stay up there for weeks on end. Then they snag the biggest prize on Gray. No fn way, cocksuckers! I never would have thought I would need to rush putting up routes on Gray and now over 16 people in one day on Gray! So crazy! Well I hope the new invaders are as awesome as that group I came to love seeing up there and loosing lines to regularly and I hope they love and care for Gray like I know my favorite invaders do.

I just had a tear well up in my right eye....

Man, I miss those days.  I remember the above photo, and how great that weekend was!

I was so afraid of putting in bolts in the beginning, we truly had some death anchors on a few routes... Hehehe

Jeffe, as I look back, you handled the new wave as best you could.  Hard to think what that must have been like all those years ago!  Hell me and Kev must have been a shocker to deal with!

Titanic is still waiting, maybe even pry off the sail?  From above of course!

We were hoping to meet you DaveyTree, too bad you missed it. Maybe if we make it to Lunesta Fiesta if not sooner?

You need a break Munge, come on out. What sucked if you don't mind my asking? Naturally you don't need to answer on the internet if it was bad like you were raped by a bear or something.

Munge I'm curious how it's going over there. We've missed ya. Soyo will still be here when you are done, but I think you should be having alot of fun too. Hopefully?

Sunday looks horrible for weather, but we hope to get out there anyways. Just camping and hanging out if worse comes to worse sounds like alot of fun.

And DaveyTree you were one of the folks we hoped to see there last Saturday but missed. We may have family visiting during the LF, but if we can fanagle it.., the midnight event sounds great!

Glad people like 'em, but yah, even though I love seeing more pics as much as anyone, John needs to understand he climbs at least 20 times more often than I do, so certainly has far more pics to share.  ;D

But since I have a moment, here's a few oldies from 2007:

Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye Ridge PICS thread
Post by: John on August 06, 2015, 11:32:18 am
That is the longest, somewhat-sustained-steepness section but otherwise pretty low angle. Great, featured and clean rock but "ledgy" and few long lines. Only Bush Ninjas would appreciate it.

There is a super-featured knobby section above the bushy ramp an OW to the left that has only been toproped. Steep but the knobs are so big they sort of cancel out the feeling of the steepness.

Here are photos of a couple of new moderates on Red Feather. Still is one of the best summits in Southern Yosemite.

An arete on the SE Face, about 5.8-9ish.

Short OW to steep knobs on South Face, about 5.8
(http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/jhgodar/P1140159_zps2hoj9mrz.jpg)

The Dammer summit shot with Minerva in the background.

BTW the green knob bands on the North end of Minerva are simply mesmerizing as the sun sets behind and lights them up around 2:30 (already set in this shot but you must see to believe how beautiful it is). Gorgeous rock. Wither, Cowboy Cracks, Practice Green and The Fairway go right through there.

God Is Great on Fallen Eagle
(http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/jhgodar/P1140026_zpsbk94xi3j.jpg)

Still smoky from the Willow fire when we climbed here a while back.

God Is Good is over here, right of GOGr. This waterfall area is nuts in a normal spring. The waterfall slashes across the right face and gets re-blasted across even farther when it all lands in a scoopy ledge that acts like a launch ramp. Great water show.

On that Delk climb, we should've gotten a photo of the 'bathtub' - it wasn't particularly spectacular in person but I always was curious about it from the Spencer topo.

It's not very exciting but this is the currently-empty "bathtub" in the foreground.
Don't try and climb to the bathtub drawn in the current guide it is drawn like you go to this other hole out in the middle of the face which would be bad. That said, the original topo is drawn really weird and is unclear where to go from the true bathtub. We went straight up via a left-facing flake to runout face which matches the topo's location of a crack but it showed a right-facing flake. A right-facing flake existed (you can see my last piece in it) but in reality looked a lot less appealing and would be a ropedrag issue having left the belay at the bathtub. Anyhoo, this climb has serious logistical issues and will never be a trade route.
Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye Ridge PICS thread
Post by: susan on August 19, 2015, 08:21:11 am
I enjoyed it enough not to say it would never be a trade route. It reminded me for a moment while climbing it of White Horse Ledges in NH.It wasn't the most 5.fun ever had but was still fun. Way run at the top as topo  indicates though. Would be something to see in the spring sometime between when the waterfalls across the creek are going strong and yet these climbs are dry enough. Also we didn't find what was 5.8 about the exit pitches other than their being so run.

Really funny to hear "trade route" being associated with any route in SoYo, but I guess it's evolving a bit to that point as more visitors come and certain routes get some buzz.
Looks like a fine quiet outback adventure to me, confusing topo and all.

Hmm, wasn't trying to post a pic. Were you referring to my last post (which was intended to be a caption for your previous photo)?

But here's a photo I like:

What have you got against hyphens?  ;)

Very annoying. I was using Google Photos for the past year or so with success (formerly Picassa, I think). Now they seem to have changed something... again. Hope none of my previous shared pics have disappeared. Can you let me know if none appear for you anymore on previous pages in this thread?

I've never uploaded to the Soyo image hosting, and would rather not, unless it's the only thing that will now work.

We are pretty settled where we are yet quite like the sense of escaping every chance we get. If we moved closer by, would we camp much anymore? That's so much part of the fun that we probably would. Also, there's figuring on which town to move to, and so far where we are holds the most appeal yet. Anyway, hope you are adjusting well to your new digs Mike. Would be nice not to have to do the long drive and to have such a great backyard.

Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Shuteye Ridge PICS thread
Post by: susan on November 11, 2015, 05:03:43 pm
O no don't apologize, no need for that.

Story is that I went a little outside my comfort zone when I placed one bolt in particular on this climb. I wanted to place it not far from what looked like a perfectly good crack from the ground when up close that crack peters out. So at the time, I asked my friends on the ground their opinion, and the report back was pretty much that it looked lame to bolt so near the crack, despite my protests. So I managed to climb a bit further out riding on their great enthusiasm and encouragement, and now I kid that I was 'like a puppet on a string' following the instruction of a well meaning ground crew that could lead me to do almost anything, because much to all our surprise the bolt ended up a wee bit farther out than any of us would have most wanted. Not too far out though we think.

I tried my hand at Photoshop on this one. I think it is a shot right before or after the photo a handful of posts back, tilted more realistically, lightened up the rock and darkened the sky. Now you can see Sue. Originally I just stuck the camera out as far as I could so I couldn't see what I was shooting, hence the crooked shots

Anyway, Sasha pointed out to me she can't read this thread cuz she ain't a member. Send her an email or text and demand she sign up. She gave me some lame ass excuse that she doesn't have time to read message boards, I'm all No-comprendo? (lol)

No pictures, but yesterday was a bluebird day in the Shuteye Ridge area.  The view of snow on the Minarets and Mammoth Mountain as well as the sun on the domes below was fantastic.  This was likely the last weekend for climbing in Shuteye for the season since more snow and rain are forecast for later this week.

I drove in on the Minarets Road.  It was passible in my Prius, but curves east of the ridge have snow and ice on them.  I drove up the Shuteye Pass East Trailhead road, but did not make it to the trailhead due to the muddy road with snow on it.  Although the gate is open, I think until December 1, please do not try to drive up it.  The dirt road does not drain well and is very muddy and wet, even where snow is not on it.  I did not get stuck, but trying to turn around on the road in the slippery mud in my Prius was a bit dicey.  Now I understand the mention in the guidebook of not driving on this road when it is wet, even if snow is not present.

Whoever goes up this road in the spring to get climbing areas past the Shuteye Pass Trailhead, you will need to bring a chainsaw.  A tree about 12" diameter has falling across the road just past the trailhead parking.

I decided to investigate possible climbing in cracks and flakes behind the A Slab With A View formation (see my post in the new routes thread for this new area).  I had to post hole up through wet snow going up the Shuteye Pass Trail.  At least I did not have to worry about finding my trail through the bush below the slab since snow covered the bushes.  However, punching through the snow to openings below made the going rough.  I finally got to the gully behind A Slab With A View.  I was investigating some new possible climbs in this gully, but when I got to the base of then, I discovered that the rock was extremely low angle.  This was disappointing, but you do not get a good perspective of the slope when you look straight at a face.  There was a large very wet snow bank at the base that prevented me from even approaching the crack, but I would guess that it would only be about 5.0 - 5.1.

I did continue up the gully and then up to the very top of the formation.  Then I post holed through snow up to 3 feet deep to the top of Shuteye Ridge.  Coming down through the deep wet snow between A Slab With A View and The Sundial was very difficult even going down hill.  I ended up not doing any climbing in this area since there was too much snow.

I did go to Chiquito Dome later in the day.  There was no snow on the approach or at the base of Chiquito, but the mosquitos were horrible.  100% DEET deterred them from landing on me, but did not deter the swarm of them around my head.  The road curve just before the Chiquito Dome trailhead side road is covered in ice since it is shaded.  As I was packing my gear into my car after climbing, the only car I saw the entire day came by going very fast.  I though for sure I would hear the car slide off the road around the icy curve, but the car made it through since I did not hear a crash and heard the car continuing on the road.  I did the 5.8 climb on Playground Wall just to the right of "Black & Blue Planet" although I do not know the name of this climb since a friend has my guidebook at the moment.

Mark - Glad you got out there again. That's a good deal of hiking.  Nice imagining what it's like up there and all the way to Sun Dial.

Thanks for the report on the roads too.

I found the skeets to be some hours of terrible this summer and fall. Read that it doesn't take much standing water for them to breed, something like only a teaspoon or bottle cap of water will do.

Getting there - still a big ice block at the base of where Gray gets the most shade but no biggie. But that is a large formation and I only climbed a couple of routes there, so I wonder if it may still have some runoff in places, some dampness in any mossy cracks. Minerva, Owl, Beagles Nest all seemed much the same if not even better condition as they get more sun than Gray in general. The creek I heard was a bit much for crossing for getting to Electric or Owl currently.

Is it just me, or is there kind of a rest hole/cavity in the grey rock side of that chimney, susu?
Gotta get back, if that's where I think it is! Oi, my memory is fading...

Hey Nater! Yes there is right by the old manky 1/4" anchor that no one would be well served to use as an anchor anymore. This is Old Man's Fancy. Or Young Man's... I too forget.... which is which. It is a classic.

Yes a great time tho you two were missed!

That climb may look grungy, but it is cool and interesting in the moves it demands. Reminds me of a corkscrew, twisting and turning and looking all around while going up. But in addition to the giant arrow head death flake lowish in the climb that doesn't seem to budge, there is a block a couple few bricks in size on the left wall at top of the pitch which forms a short shelf for an irresistible hold which is actually almost completely hairline fractured. Seems solid for now but maybe not for long.

In the last photo, in the crack above Sasha's left shoulder a .5 is like the bomb. What an awesome pitch! Miss it and that whole rock. Miss you all too. And John and Sue thanks so much for coming all the way out to Pine Creek, meant a lot!

Wonder what camera did take those clear, crisp, great shots.... with all that bright light and still made clear and visible the shadowed background.
